The Super App Takes Shape
Robinhood's Q1 2026 earnings call showed a company trying to evolve from a trading app into a broader financial platform. Management highlighted its role as broker and initial trustee for Trump Accounts, alongside 500,000 funded accounts added during the quarter and more than 1.5 million over the previous year.
The expansion now reaches beyond brokerage into retirement products, Gold, credit cards and banking, making customer relationships across multiple financial services a larger part of Robinhood's strategy.
The strategy rests on three pillars: number one in active traders, number one in wallet share for the next generation, and the long-term goal of becoming the number one global financial ecosystem. The results suggest the strategy is working. Total net revenues grew 15% year-over-year to $1.1 billion, net deposits reached $18 billion, and gold subscribers hit a record 4.3 million, up 36% year-over-year, with 40% of new customers in Q1 adopting gold.
Signals of the Super App Shift
- Gold as Gateway40% of new customers now adopt gold, up from low single digits, driving multi-product adoption across banking, credit, and retirement.
- Banking's BreakoutRobinhood Banking grew 5x with a 40% direct deposit rate, signaling customers view it as a primary account rather than a brokerage add-on.
- Daily Use CasesBanking and credit cards are daily-use products that deepen engagement beyond episodic trading, creating a durable customer relationship.
- Deposit Resilience$18 billion in net deposits despite a tough macro backdrop (government shutdown, software selloff, global conflict) shows customer trust and diversification.
The Numbers Behind the Pivot
The financial results show a company firing on multiple cylinders. Revenue grew 15% to $1.07 billion, driven by growth across the entire business. Transaction volumes increased with growth in equities and options, and the company posted record quarters for both prediction markets and futures. Interest-earning assets also continued to grow, more than offsetting lower short-term interest rates.
The company maintained discipline on costs, managing Q1 expenses to be significantly lower than outlook. Adjusted opex and SBC was $607 million, including $14 million of costs related to Rothera and Trump Accounts that weren't in the original outlook.
Looking ahead, the company expects to invest an incremental $100 million into building Trump Accounts, with approximately half in Q2, and has raised its full-year 2026 outlook for adjusted opex and SBC by the equivalent amount to $2.7–2.825 billion.
Q2 is off to a strong start. April trading volumes for equities and options are on track to be the highest month of the year and the second highest in company history. Net deposits are already approximately $5 billion month-to-date, and retirement assets just crossed $30 billion.
Banking and Credit: The Daily Use Case
The most striking evidence of the super app thesis is in banking. Robinhood Banking grew 5x since the last earnings call, with over $2 billion in net deposits and over 125,000 funded customers. The most telling metric: a 40% direct deposit attach rate, which signals customers are treating this as a primary bank account, not an add-on to their brokerage.
The gold credit card has also surpassed 800, 000 customers with $15 billion in annualized purchase volume. The company is on track to surpass 1 million cards and $100 million ARR well before the end of the year. Demand for the new platinum card (described as the heaviest credit card on the market) has exceeded expectations, with the company responding to initial feedback before rolling out in the coming months.
Prediction Markets and the Active Trader Arsenal
Active traders drove record levels across prediction markets, futures, index options, shorting, and margin in Q1. The company is preparing for the Q2 launch of Rothera, its exchange joint venture with Susquehanna, which will give Robinhood end-to-end control of the customer experience including product selection and pricing.
On the industry's evolution, Vlad Tenev sees consolidation ahead. "I don't believe there will be dozens of DCMs in the future. I think there will be some consolidation and I think we should see that shaking out in the next couple years." Robinhood's advantage: 27 million funded accounts in the US and the Susquehanna partnership, which positions the company for both retail and institutional strength.
AI as the Multiplier
Robinhood is "turbocharging" the business with AI across three fronts: internal efficiency, customer-facing tools, and market participation. Robinhood Cortex, unveiled about a year ago, is now used by nearly 1 million customers, with the Cortex assistant rolled out to all gold customers. Customers are using it for portfolio and P&L analysis, stock research, and stock screening.
Internally, over 90% of employees are already using AI tooling in their workflows. Commits per engineer hit a new high in Q1, up 50% since the start of last year. Last year, the company generated nine-figure efficiency benefits in engineering and customer support, absorbing 50% volume growth with flat hiring in customer service.
What the AI Investment Unlocks
- Efficiency at ScaleRobinhood absorbed 50% volume growth with flat customer service hiring through AI-driven productivity gains.
- Shipping FasterCommits per engineer hit a new high in Q1, up 50% since the start of last year, as engineers leverage AI tools to build faster.
- Agentic on the HorizonNew agentic AI products are coming in late May, with AI as a centerpiece at upcoming product events including the July crypto event and Hood Summit.
- The Efficiency DividendNine-figure efficiency benefits already generated in engineering and customer support, with AI adoption now at 90% of employees and rising weekly.
Trump Accounts and the Public Sector Opportunity
The Trump Accounts program is a historic milestone for Robinhood's mission to democratize finance. Over 5.5 million American children are already signed up, with over 60 million eligible. The company is investing $100 million incrementally, with approximately half in Q2, to build the app and customer experience. The work is contracted on a cost-plus basis with a small margin, so revenues are expected to exceed costs.
Beyond the federal program, Tenev noted interest from states and other countries looking to replicate the model. "We've heard from lots and lots of states, so not even other countries. So, it's been states and other countries who just want to do similar things." This could evolve into a broader public sector business, extending Robinhood's mission beyond retail and institutional to governments.
International Expansion and the Tokenization Super Cycle
International is picking up, approaching 1 million funded customers. The company plans to launch crypto in Canada around midyear and has received in-principal approval from regulators in Singapore for a comprehensive suite of brokerage services. Bitstamp continues to win institutional customers, gaining market share, with particular interest in institutional lending.
Tenev framed crypto strategy around tokenization rather than Bitcoin prices. "We're at the very beginning of what's going to be a tokenization super cycle." The tokenized offering will allow Robinhood to serve the long tail of markets efficiently, with traditional brokerage assets increasingly delivered in tokenized form to customers around the world.
IPO Access and the Democratization of Private Markets
Robinhood has shifted from clawing for retail IPO allocations to having CEOs engage directly for help with their retail strategy. Allocations have grown from under 10% to 20–30%, with founders now asking "how big is too big." Tenev called this a durable trend, with retail earning a real seat at the table in IPOs.
Robinhood Ventures' first fund RVI had its IPO in March, with a portfolio of late-stage frontier companies including OpenAI, added just last week. The aspiration: "if you're a founder, retail should be part of the initial seed capital for your company." The company is already building the initial portfolio for its next fund, RVI II.
