  • Will AI arrive as a sudden superintelligence that leaves everyone else behind?

    Huang expects progress to be gradual rather than a single breakthrough moment, with capabilities simply getting better and better. He argues no single actor's AI will be far ahead of everyone else's, because many AIs are being developed in parallel and each one can check the others.

    He compares the dynamic to cybersecurity: if your AI does something surprising, his AI will quickly recognize and counter it, so the idea that one party's AI would treat everyone else's as a Neanderthal is unlikely.

    When the flawed Sega game console contract threatened to vaporize the company, Jensen flew to Japan and told Sega's CEO honestly that the technology did not work, asked out of the contract, and requested the final $5 million be converted into an investment — which the CEO granted after two days, reportedly simply because he liked the young Jensen.

    Geoffrey Hinton predicted about five years ago that AI would eliminate the need for radiologists, and while nearly every radiologist now uses AI, their numbers have actually grown.     Jensen believes AI will substantially collapse the technology divide because it is the easiest application ever to use — ChatGPT reached nearly a billion users almost overnight, and you can speak to it in any human language instead of Python or C++. He acknowledges the counterview that AI needs energy, GPUs, and factories, but says phones already run decent AI and that improved efficiency will let every country benefit, even with yesterday's rather than frontier AI.

    He cites a ten-fold-per-five-years style trend from Moore's law and says Nvidia's accelerated computing improved performance 100,000 times over the last decade, so the energy needed for most people's AI will become minuscule. He expects hundreds-of-megawatt small nuclear reactors localized at companies within six or seven years.

    He believes machines can imitate human intelligence — understanding information, breaking down problems, and performing tasks — but distinguishes intelligence from consciousness, which involves experience and knowing one's own existence. The uncle enrolled them at Oneida Baptist Institute in Clark County, Kentucky — then the poorest county in America — where Jensen cleaned bathrooms for a dorm of a hundred boys, and his parents joined them in the U.S. two years later, arriving in their late thirties with almost no money.

    For two years the brothers recorded monthly audio tapes describing their new life to their parents, who recorded replies over the same tape and mailed it back — a memory Huang says breaks his heart for being lost.
