Quick answer

Count a chapter, summary or document

Paste the passage you actually need to measure, or choose a readable PDF, Word document or plain-text file. The totals update as you edit. For a chapter assignment, count only the chapter text when possible: a whole-book file can include contents pages, references and notes. You can remove those sections in the editor before counting again. Files are processed on your device and are never uploaded to KnowledgePilot.

Document word counter with word, character and page totals for readable files – KnowledgePilot.

What counts as a word?

This counter counts whitespace-separated groups containing a letter or number. For example, ‘Check the source before sharing.’ counts as five words. Hyphenated terms count as one group. Characters include spaces and punctuation, and use JavaScript UTF-16 units, so some emoji count as more than one. Your editor or assignment system may use different rules. Languages without spaces between words need a language-specific counter.

Use the count to edit a summary

A word limit gives you an editing target, not a guarantee that the summary is complete. Check that each important idea and qualification survives the cut. Remove repeated points before cutting evidence. Compare your draft with the original when an exact number, definition or exception matters. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute; the separate reading-time calculator lets you choose a pace and compare it with video playback time.

File and estimate limits

PDF files need a selectable text layer; scanned pages need OCR elsewhere first. Word files provide text, not a reliable printed page count. PDFs report their actual page count; EPUB files show word totals for sections in reading order. Choose files under 50 MB; PDF extraction is limited to 1,000 pages and two million characters. EPUB files must be unencrypted, under 40 MB expanded, and contain readable chapter text. Digital books do not have a reliable printed page count. Estimated tokens use roughly one token per four characters, rather than a model tokenizer, and must not be used for billing or context-limit guarantees. The case buttons alter text mechanically; undo restores your previous draft.

Frequently asked questions

Does the word counter use AI or upload my document?

No. Counting and supported file extraction run in your browser, without AI or an account.

Can I count words in a scanned PDF?

Only when the PDF has a readable text layer. This tool does not perform OCR.

Is the token estimate exact?

No. It is a character-based approximation. Different models and languages use different tokenizers.
