Quick answer

What position size calculator does

The basic position-size formula divides a risk budget by the distance between entry and stop. Whole-unit rounding reduces the theoretical position so the planned amount does not exceed that budget. The notional value is entry price multiplied by units. The illustrative 1R, 2R and 3R levels show multiples of the entry-to-stop distance; they are arithmetic examples, not targets derived from market analysis.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter account size and the percentage you are willing to risk in the scenario.
  2. Enter a hypothetical entry and stop, choosing long or short.
  3. Calculate whole units and inspect the planned risk and notional size.

Worked example

With an account of 10,000, a one-percent risk budget, entry at 100 and stop at 95, the theoretical budget is 100 and the distance is 5. The result is 20 whole units, notional 2,000, with planned stop-distance risk of 100 before costs.

What to check before using the result

A stop does not guarantee the execution price. Gaps, slippage, fees, short-sale constraints and instrument contract sizes can change realized risk. This calculation assumes one price unit per share or unit and does not handle options multipliers or futures tick values. A position whose notional value exceeds the account requires additional review of leverage and financing. Not financial advice.
